The directory is a resource for businesses and organizations wishing to exhibit and display local art, to commission artwork for a specific purpose, or to identify artists and artisans who can provide instruction in their medium.

Berkeley County artists are encouraged to create their own free listings in the Directory by submitting their information on the Berkeley Arts Council website at www.berkeleyartswv.org/directory/register.php. Forms will also be available at Berkeley Arts Council events, including exhibits and workshops. Enrollment is open to those living or creating their art in Berkeley County. Forms will also be available at Berkeley Arts Council events, including exhibits and workshops.

Arts Council Board Member and Webmaster Rip Smith explained “We know that there is a wealth of creative talent here in Berkeley County but until now nobody has attempted to develop a comprehensive listing of that talent. We hope that this Directory will open new opportunities for our artists in Berkeley County as well as serve as a resource for the larger community.”

Arts Council President Malinda Shaver adds “Compiling the directory will help us to represent the interest of the artists while we work to develop additional resources for the arts in our county.”

The current listing includes artists who registered since the Directory was announced in July. The Directory will be updated periodically as new listings are submitted.

Scenes from Berkeley County Featured in Library Art Display

Artists often gain inspiration from the views that are part of their daily life, using their personal perspective and talents to capture what they see and share it. A group of painters and photographers recently responded to an invitation to include their creative efforts in the August exhibit at the Martinsburg Library, titled “Scenes from Berkeley County.”

Breakfast Meeting
"Breakfast Meeting" by Kat Cimaglio

Sponsored by the Berkeley Arts Council, the artwork includes pastoral studies, depictions of historic structures, city street scenes, and closeup portrayals of nature. The agricultural aspect of their surroundings inspired Kat Cimaglio, who painted “Breakfast Meeting” and Edwin John Symonds who offers “Black Angus.” Treasures from the past are preserved in Mary Jo Bennett’s “Harlan Mills Spring House” photo; Pat Kinzie’s “Old Barn” and Jane Horst’s watercolor titled “Summer Spring House.”

Martinsburg’s architecture was painted by Leia Wood (“Hartwood Manor” and “Martin Street”) and photographed by Mary Jo Bennett (“Poorhouse Farm Reflections”) and by Rip Smith (“Boydville Mansion” and “Garden Gate, Boydville”.  Nature studies also absorbed Jane Horst (”Firefly Field”), Pat Kinzie (“Iris in a Fence Row”) and Edwin John Symonds (“A Berkeley Stream”).

The exhibit will be on view in the area adjacent to the circulation desk on the main level of the library at King and Queen streets through August 29. The exhibit was coordinated by Miriam Saunders for the Berkeley Arts Council. For information about other Arts Council activities, visit www.berkeleyartswv.org.

Enrollment is open to those living or creating their artform in Berkeley County. Registration is online at the Arts Council’s website at http://www.berkeleyartswv.org/directory. Forms will also be available at Berkeley Arts Council events, including exhibits and workshops.
