The exhibit, which will be produced by the Berkeley Arts Council, will have the theme “Art and Earth: My Art – My World.” Artists in all media are invited to submit works that express their feelings about nature and the environment.

The Juror for the exhibit will be Dr. Geraldine Kiefer, Associate Professor of Art History at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia.

Entries for the exhibit will be accepted starting January 3, 2013 and the deadline for submission is February 19, 2013.

The Berkeley Arts Council is a 501(c)(3) non‐profit organization incorporated in West Virginia working to ensure that Berkeley County has a vibrant, vital arts environment by promoting awareness, understanding and appreciation of the literary, visual and performing arts in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia.

Redbrick Gallery is a place to view and enjoy art, meet other artists and patrons, as well as discuss all artistic endeavors. Doreane Conrad opened the gallery in August 2007 and is located in historic downtown Martinsburg in a three story brick building that was built circa 1890. Renovation on the building began in 2004, which was home to pigeons and bats at that time. After three years of extensive renovations it is now the home of the art gallery and the owner’s family.

The Berkeley Arts Council and The Redbrick Gallery in Martinsburg, West Virginia announce the Third Annual Art and Earth Juried Exhibit in Martinsburg. The exhibit will be on display at the Redbrick Gallery, 404 West King Street, Martinsburg, West Virginia from April 21 – May 11, 2013.

The exhibit, which will be produced by the Berkeley Arts Council, will have the theme “Art and Earth: My Art – My World” and entries should reflect the artist’s view of nature, the environment, or reflect an Earth Day related theme.

The exhibition is open to all visual artists over the age of 18 in all media. Entries must be original works of art that have been completed within the last three (3) years, and have not been previously exhibited in The Redbrick Gallery.

BAC offers classes with Noted Watercolorist Anna Hogbin

The Berkeley Arts Council is pleased to announce that Anna Hogbin will be instructing a series of classes in Introduction to Watercolor Painting. The class begins January 9 and continues for six weeks. It will be held at the Berkeley 2000 Recreation Center from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. each Thursday. Registration is available online through January 2 at www.berkeleyartswv.org/instruction and the fee of $75 can be paid by credit card or Paypal.

Anna Hogbin is a well known teaching watercolor painter at the Valley Art Association in Hagerstown and elsewhere in the tri-county region.  A life-time educator, Anna holds a BA in home economics from Shepherd University with emphasis on design and an MEd in counseling. Workshops with nationally known watercolorists added to her expansive knowledge and enabled her paintings to win top prizes at regional shows. Her work has been juried into regional exhibits as well.

Other classes being offered include Pottery and Handbuilding (Monday evening), Introduction to Oil Painting (Tuesday evening), Jewelry Design (Wednesday evening) and a class for Home School students in Art Exploration (Monday morning). December 17 Deadline for “Amplify the Arts” Grants

The December 17 deadline for the second round of applications for the “Amplify the Arts” Grant program is fast approaching.

The Berkeley Arts Council has received a state grant to help fund an “Amplify the Arts” program to support smaller arts projects produced by organizations or individuals. The Council is currently accepting applications for the current fiscal year (2012-2013) with a submission deadline of December 17, 2012. We expect the first awards will be announced by the middle of January, 2013. Projects must be completed by June 30, 2013.

Projects are being sought that will:

  • expand availability and accessibility of the arts within our community;
  • involve young people in the arts;
  • provide arts experiences to new or underserved audiences;
  • use the arts in an innovative way to enhance community life;
  • show collaboration among two or more organizations and/or individuals.

Grants will be up to $500, or half of the total project budget, whichever is less. Applications must be postmarked no later than December 17.

In conjunction with the theatrical Christmas shows at the Apollo Theater in Martinsburg, WV, the Berkeley County Arts Council December show in the theater lobby features spiritual artworks by W. J. Gilbert Kellogg. This body of work explores themes of a spiritual nature using multiple modes of conceptual expression, ranging from abstraction to figurative realism.

Having a broad and varied stylistic range has enabled Ms. Kellogg to create art throughout her professional art career in multiple media, reaching a wide audience of viewers. It has also facilitated use of her art in many venues, and the exploration of ideas, concepts and themes for use of her art in fine art, commercial art, advertising, marketing, brand identity, web applications, and artisanal realms. Originally from Charleston, WV, she earned her undergraduate degree at Marshall University. Though she left WV for a time to work in corporate advertising and technology, she returned to the Mountain State in 2006 to raise her family.

Ms. Kellogg is a published illustrator and writer, as well as an award-winning fine artist. Additional artwork and crafts by Ms. Kellogg may be seen at the annual Berkeley Arts Holiday Art and Craft Market, 115 S. Berkeley Community Chorus Debut Concert

Congratulations to Jeff Poland, director, and the singers of the Berkeley Community Chorus on a wonderfully successful debut concert at Martinsburg High School the evening of December 1, 2012.

The chorus was supported by the Berkeley Arts Council through its “Amplify the Arts” grant program funded in part by the West Virginia Commission on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
