Open Studio Sessions start in October
Students and instructors have been asking for it, so here it is: The new “Open Studio” program at the Berkeley Art Works begins in October and artists of all skill levels are invited to come by and enjoy the collaborative atmosphere along with some on-on-one coaching by our experienced instructors. While this is not a formal instruction program, it’s a great opportunity to continue to practice what you have learned in other classes, revitalize those rusty skills, get some help with a stubborn composition, or just take the time for yourself to focus on your artwork with fewer distractions and some expert advice!
Come for a particular instructor, or choose a session that fits your schedule. Each instructor has primary subjects but all excel at teaching the basics as well. In addition to Jean Kellogg and Judith Becker, this fall we’re adding watercolor specialist Mikkey Tarantino to the roster.
A fee of $25 (cash or check) covers each three-hour session, and may be paid when you arrive and sign in. There’s no preregistration so it’s a good idea to claim your seat early. Plan to bring the materials and supplies you need for your particular project.

Open Studio with Judith Becker
Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 15 , 29, Nov. 12: 1 pm_to 4 pm
Wednesday evenings, Nov. 5 and 19, 5:30 to 8:30 pm
Judith Becker is an experienced artist with dual degrees in design and education. She has recently moved to the Eastern Panhandle, but previously taught a variety of classes in Garrett County, Maryland. Judith specializes in painting with colored pencils, pastels and watercolors and often mixes her media for unusual effects. Her subjects mostly are botanical s and scenes from her travels. Her popular classes cover many art techniques targeted for both the beginner and the more experienced painter.

Jean Kellogg teaches acrylic painting and multimedia for BAC, but has a broad background and training in art.
Jean Kellogg is an award-winning regional fine and commercial artist, art instructor for arts organizations, and for county and state continuing education programs; also an illustrator, writer and artisan. She works in a wide variety of media, such as Prismacolors, charcoal, conte’, oil & acrylic paints, and mixed media; she also creates toys, costume jewelry, textile goods and other crafts which are marketed locally through various venues.

A new addition to BAC’s roster of instructors, Mikkey moved from oils to watercolor and has studied with passion ever since, developing a realistic style that exhibits strong drawing and strong color choices. She is an elected member of the Garden State Watercolor Society, The New Jersey Watercolor Society and the Baltimore Watercolor Society. The American Artist Watercolor Magazine selected Mikkey as one of ‘Twenty Emerging Artists’ in their Fall 2007 publication. Her website is mikkeyart.com.
