Offering a casual evening get-together, the Berkeley Art Works invites you to learn about one artist’s personal voyage to a unique, creative and personal expression, one that you may be inspired to pursue.
Katrina Brees comes to the Eastern Panhandle where she is currently an artist at the North Mountain Residencies south of Hedgesville. Based in New Orleans, Katrina explores the creative possibilities of funeral practices from around the world, drawing inspiration that can be applied in planning a personally meaningful conclusion to one’s earthly presence. She has integrated skills and experience gained from the New Orleans traditions of parade groups, such as the Krewe of Kolossos, which she founded. (For more, visit fantasticcasket.com.)
There is a growing openness today to choosing a personal approach to what is necessary at the end of life. Brees is pursuing a goal of empowering individuals and families to choose what feels correct spiritually, and financially. In this workshop-type presentation Ms. Brees will show examples of burial options and casket traditions from around the world and discuss perspectives on death related to biology, statistics, finance, ecology, and of course ritual and family practices.
This foundation opens a discussion on designing our own fantasy burial vessels and funerals. Learn your rights, your options and your power to undertake a fresh approach to death.
Follow up by downloading documents and worksheets to plan your own funeral as well as casket patterns by Brees.
Planning our own fantasy funerals is a journey that will bring us to new understandings about death and ultimately teach us what we value about our lives. Like the quintessential jazz funeral’s “second line” we can choose new customs, as Bress encourages, to put the Fun in Funeral.
Our Friday, September 15 workshop begins at 6:00. You may register at berkeleyartswv.org; no fee is required but a donation to the Berkeley Arts Council is appreciated. For more background on Katrina Brees, visit fantasticcasket.com.
