Deadline Extended! 9th Annual Eastern West Virginia Juried Exhibit

Extended Deadline August 1, 2021 Midnight

The Berkeley Arts Council in Martinsburg, WV announces the 9th Annual Eastern West Virginia Juried Exhibit, to be displayed in the Berkeley Art Works gallery, 116 North Queen Street in Martinsburg, WV from September 2 to October 9, 2021. The extended deadline for entries is Sunday, August 1, 2021 (Midnight).

Eligibility

The exhibit is open to artists over the age of 18 who reside in one of the eight counties that comprise the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia: Berkeley, Jefferson, Morgan, Hampshire, Hardy, Grant, Mineral, and Pendleton.

Theme

The theme for the exhibit is open. Works in any medium or technique, in 2- or 3-dimensions are welcome. Entries must be original works of art that have been completed within the last 3 years and have not been previously exhibited at the Berkeley Art Works.

Juror

Ally Christmas is a visual artist currently living and working in Shepherdstown, WV, where she teaches lens-based arts and coordinates the Photo Bachelor of Fine Arts program at Shepherd University.  Much of her work revolves around notions of selfhood, virtuality, and lived experience.  Her hybrid practice involves a number of forms including digital video, still photography, tintypes, palladium prints, bookmaking, gifs, cinemagraphs, and installation.  Her work has been shown at a variety of venues, including Bitforms gallery in New York City; aCinema’s aDifferent Festival in Milwaukee; ATHICA in Athens, GA; Marcia Wood Gallery in Atlanta, GA; the Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, CO; and the Alternative Film Festival in Toronto, where her video piece, Syncing, won the festival award for Best Web Series.  Christmas earned a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from the University of Virginia.  In 2018 she received her Master of Fine Arts in Photo/Video from the University of Georgia, after which she spent two years teaching video art and photography courses at Grinnell College as the Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Video and New Media.

Entry Fee

The entry fee for one or two works is $25. Additional works may be submitted for a fee of $10 for each additional work, up to a total of four works.

Awards

Best in Show, Merit Award and Honorable Mention. The projected prize fund for the exhibit is $350. Additional prizes will be determined by the number of entries.

General Guidelines and Terms for Accepted Work:

Accepted artwork must be ready for presentation. Two-dimensional works must not exceed 48 inches in width, including frame. Two-dimensional works must be suitably framed. All entries to be hung must be equipped with wire for hanging (no saw tooth or single loop hangers, please). Three-dimensional work must not exceed 72 inches in height and 36 inches in width or depth and must be free-standing. All artwork must have identifying information attached: Title, artist’s name, medium, price. No substitution, exchange, modification, or withdrawal of works is permitted after they are accepted for the exhibition. The BAC reserves the right to reject any work that is not consistent with the work presented in the digital entry image, or if the framing or presentation is not adequate.

Commission – The BAC will retain a 30% commission on all sales. Works may not be removed during the exhibition.

Insurance/Liability – By delivering or shipping your work, you agree that, although the BAC will take reasonable measures to ensure the safety of the entries in the gallery, the BAC is not responsible for loss of or damage to the artwork, and the artist is responsible for his/her own insurance if desired.

Publicity – The artist grants permission for the BAC to use submitted images of artwork for promotion and publicity. The BAC will promote the exhibit through its Web site, e-mail list, press releases and social media.

Delivery and Shipping of Artwork:
All accepted work must arrive between Monday August 23 and Saturday August 28, 2021. Works accepted for the exhibition are to be hand delivered or shipped to:

Hand-Delivered Work – Artwork to be hand-delivered must arrive at the Berkeley Art Works on Thursday and Friday August 26 & 27 11am to 5pm, and Saturday August 28 11am to 4pm. All artwork must have identifying information attached: Title, artist’s name, medium, price.

Shipped Work – Artwork to be shipped must arrive between Monday August 23 and Friday August 27. Staff will be at the gallery to receive shipments between 11am and 5pm. Work must be shipped prepaid to the Berkeley Art Works in sturdy, reusable packing. (Please no styrofoam packing peanuts!) Plexiglass must be used on all shipped works, no glass. All artwork must have identifying information attached: Title, artist’s name, medium, price.

For return shipping, please include a pre-paid, printed shipping label with your work. Hand-written paperwork is not acceptable. Failure to provide a proper pre-paid shipping label will result in delays and increased costs for shipping the work back to you, and could result in damage to your work due to very limited storage options at the gallery.

IMPORTANT: The Berkeley Art Works does not receive U.S. Mail at the gallery address. Do not ship to the gallery address by U.S. Postal Service. Please use UPS or FedEx. Please e-mail the tracking number(s) to us at berkeleyartswv@gmail.com. Please retain your tracking number so you can verify when the package is delivered.

Please make UPS/FedEx aware that our hours for accepting deliveries are Monday – Friday, 11am to 5pm. If you are unable to use UPS or FedEx to ship your work, please e-mail us for instructions.

Pick Up of Work at the End of the Exhibit – Artists picking up their work at the conclusion of the show should do so on Saturday October 9 2021 from 11:00am up to closing time at 4:00pm. If you cannot pick up during those times, please contact us to make arrangements. (Note that our storage is very limited.)

Notification of acceptance e-mailed & posted on or about Friday August 6 2021.
Hand delivery/shipment of accepted works to the Berkeley Art Works: Monday August 23 – Saturday August 28 2021.
Exhibit Dates: Thursday September 2 through Saturday October 9 2021.
Reception: Awards/reception to be announced.
Pick Up Work at End of Exhibit: Saturday October 9 2021 between 11:00am and 4:00pm.
