Call for ‘Watercolor Expressions’ Juried Exhibit

The Berkeley Arts Council (BAC) announces Watercolor Expressions, a national juried exhibit, to be displayed at the Berkeley Art Works, 116 North Queen Street in Martinsburg, WV from October 13 through November 20, 2021.

Eligibility – The exhibit is open to all artists throughout the continental United States, over the age of 18, working in any watercolor medium or technique, in 2- or 3-dimensions. Mixed media where watercolor is the primary medium is also welcome.

Entries – The theme for the exhibit is open. Work must be original, completed within the last three (3) years, and must not have been exhibited previously at the Berkeley Art Works. Two-dimensional work must not exceed 48 inches in width, including frame and must be equipped with wire, ready for hanging (no sawtooth or single loop hangers, please). Three-dimensional work must not exceed 72 inches in height and 36 inches in width or depth, and must be free-standing.

Juror – Lynn Ferris, AWS, NWS, TWSA is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, and the Transparent Watercolor Society of America. Her work was the subject of feature articles in Watercolor magazine and The Art of Watercolour and can be seen in the prestigious Splash series of books published by North Light. She has served as a judge for the Brevard Watercolor Society “A Splash of Watercolor” exhibit, The Miami Watercolor Society, The Mid-Southern Watercolorists, and numerous others. Her many awards include “Best of Show” in both the Florida Watercolor Society and Tallahassee Watercolor Society annual exhibits. She has been an award winner in The Artist’s Magazine All-Media competition. Look for Lynn’s instructional articles in the The Artist’s Magazine and Watercolor Artist. A sought-after instructor, Lynn teaches to sold out workshops both nationally and internationally.

Entry Fee – The entry fee for one or two works is $35. Additional works may be submitted for a fee of $10 for each additional work, up to a total of four works.

Awards – Best in Show, Merit Award and Honorable Mention. The projected prize fund for the exhibit is $1,000. Additional prizes may be determined by the number of entries.

Image Submission – Entries for the exhibit must be submitted as digital images for jurying. You may submit up to four works to be juried for this exhibit; one image per work. One additional image to show detail for 3-dimensional work is allowed.

The image file format should be normal (baseline) JPEG. Do not save as ‘progressive’ JPEG. Images should be 1200 pixels on the long dimension with the other dimension proportional. Save at 72 PPI/DPI at high quality setting (8 out of 10 or 80% is good). Set the filename to lastname_title_WxHxD_entrynumber.jpg (example: jones_pretty flower_11x14x1_no1.jpg).

Notification of Accepted Work – The juror’s selections will be announced by e-mail and posted on the BAC Web site on or about Friday September 10, 2021. Delivery instructions will be provided when the accepted artists are announced.

General Guidelines and Terms for Accepted Work:

Entries must be original works of art that have been completed within the last 3 years and have not been exhibited previously at the Berkeley Art Works.

Accepted artwork must be ready for presentation. Two-dimensional works must be suitably framed. All entries to be hung must be equipped with wire for hanging (no saw tooth or single loop hangers, please). Three-dimensional work must must be free-standing.

The BAC reserves the right to reject any work that is not consistent with the work presented in the digital entry image, or if the framing or presentation is not adequate.

No substitution, exchange, modification, or withdrawal of works is permitted after they are accepted for the exhibition.

Commission – The BAC will retain a 30% commission on all sales. Works may not be removed during the exhibition.

Insurance/Liability – By delivering or shipping your work, you agree that, although the BAC will take reasonable measures to ensure the safety of the entries in the gallery, the BAC is not responsible for loss of or damage to the artwork, and the artist is responsible for his/her own insurance if desired.

Publicity – The artist grants permission for the BAC to use submitted images of artwork for promotion and publicity. The BAC will promote the exhibit through its Web site, e-mail list, press releases and social media.

Delivery and Shipping of Artwork:

All accepted work must arrive between Monday October 4 and Saturday October 9, 2021. Works accepted for the exhibition are to be hand-delivered, or shipped to:

Hand-Delivered Work – Artwork to be hand-delivered must arrive at the Berkeley Art Works on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday October 6, 7 or 8 from 11am to 5pm, or Saturday October 9 from 11am to 4pm. All artwork must have identifying information attached: Title, artist’s name, medium, price.

Shipped Work – Artwork to be shipped must arrive during the week of Monday October 4 through Friday October 8, 2021. Staff will be at the gallery to receive shipments between 11am and 5pm. Work must be shipped prepaid to the Berkeley Art Works in sturdy, reusable packing. (Please no styrofoam packing peanuts!) Plexiglass must be used on all shipped works, no glass. All artwork must have identifying information attached: Title, artist’s name, medium, price.

For return shipping, a pre-paid, printed shipping label must be included with your work – no exceptions! Hand-written labels are not acceptable. The Berkeley Arts Council will not pay for return shipping. Failure to provide a proper pre-paid shipping label could result in delays and increased costs, and could result in damage to your work due to limited storage available at the gallery.

IMPORTANT: The Berkeley Art Works does not receive U.S. Mail at the gallery address. Do not ship to the gallery address by U.S. Postal Service. Please use Federal Express (FedEx) or United Parcel Service (UPS). Please e-mail the tracking number(s) to us at berkeleyartswv@gmail.com for reference; artists are responsible for tracking and verification of when the package is delivered.

Please make UPS/FedEx aware that our hours for accepting deliveries are Monday – Friday, 11am to 5pm. If you are unable to use FedEx or UPS to ship your work, please e-mail us for instructions.

Pick Up of Work at End of the Exhibit – Artists picking up their work at the conclusion of the show should do so on Saturday November 13, 2021 from 11:00am to closing time at 4:00pm.

Return of Shipped Work – The BAC will deliver shipped work to FedEx/UPS on Monday/Tuesday following the close of the show, on or about November 15-16.

Deadline for digital entries: Monday August 30, 2021 (Midnight).
Notification of acceptance e-mailed & posted: On or about Friday September 10, 2021.
Hand delivery/shipment of accepted works to the Berkeley Art Works: Monday October 4 – Saturday October 9, 2021.
