Extended Entry Deadline! 13th Annual Art & Earth Juried Art Exhibit

The Berkeley Arts Council (BAC) announces the 13th Annual Art & Earth Juried Art Exhibit. The exhibit will be on display from Wednesday April 12 to Saturday May 20, 2023 at the Berkeley Art Works, 116 North Queen Street, Martinsburg, WV.

Description: The exhibit has the theme ‘Art and Earth: My Art – My World’. Entries should reflect the artist’s view of nature, the environment, or reflect an Earth Day related theme.

Eligibility: The exhibit is open to all visual artists throughout the continental United States, over the age of 18, working in any fine art or fine craft medium or technique, in 2- or 3-dimensions, representational, abstract, or non-representational. Entries must be original works of art that have been completed within the last three (3) years, and have not been exhibited previously at the Berkeley Art Works.

Juror: The Juror is Judith Becker,

Judith received a BS in Design, Certificate in Art Education , University of Michigan and a MS in Education, Monmouth University. She started her work career as an art teacher for grades K-12. She then took a break to raise her children. She then spent over 25 years working in management for Macy’s and for Citicorp Credit Services, lastly as VP of Human Resources and Management Training. Upon her retirement, she returned to teaching by instructing mostly adults in a wide range of art design disciplines. She has taught art classes for both the Garrett County, MD art association and the Berkeley Arts Council, Martinsburg. She also had the honor to be a juror for the Waynesboro Studio Art Club and Berkeley Arts Council. In addition, she served on the Board of Directors for Alpine Lake Property Association, Terra Alta, WV, the Gerrardstown Presbyterian Church Session as a ruling elder, is a juried member of Tamarac, “The Best of West Virginia” and serves as a member of Board of Directors of the Berkeley Arts Council.

Judith specializes in using colored pencils, pastels and watercolors as well as being a specialist in color theory and composition and design. She primarily paints landscapes, hardscapes, florals, wildlife and still lifes. She is most inspired by nature, landscapes and scenes from her travels. Her work generally exhibits vibrant colors, strong compositional elements and interesting visual stories.

Entry Fee: The entry fee for the exhibit is $35 for the first two works. Artists may submit one or two additional works for $10 each, for a maximum of four works.

Awards: Best in Show, Merit Award and Honorable Mention. Total prize fund up to $1,000.

Notification of Accepted Work: Notification of the juror’s selections will be announced by e-mail and posted on our web site on or about March 22, 2023. Detailed delivery instructions and schedules will be provided when the accepted artists are announced.

Entries: Entries must be submitted as digital images for jurying. You may submit up to four works to be juried for this exhibit; one image per work. One additional image to show detail for 3-dimensional work is allowed.

The image file format should be normal (baseline) JPEG. Do not save as progressive JPEG. The images should be 1200 pixels on the long dimension with the other dimension proportional. Save at 72 PPI at high quality setting (8 out of 10 or 80% is good). Set your filename to lastname_title_WxHxD_entrynumber.jpg. (example: jones_red apple_11x14x1_no1.jpg). Dimensions should include framing.

Two-dimensional work must be ready for hanging and must not exceed 48 inches in width, including frame. Paintings and works on paper must be suitably framed. All entries to be hung must be equipped with wire, (no sawtooth or loop hangers, please). Three-dimensional works, must not exceed 72 inches in height and 36 inches in width or depth. Three-dimensional work must be free-standing.

General Guidelines for Accepted Work:

Entries must be original works of art that have been completed within the last 3 years and have not been exhibited previously at the Berkeley Art Works.

The BAC reserves the right to reject any work that is not consistent with the work presented in the digital entry image, or if the framing or presentation is not adequate.

No substitution, exchange, modification, or withdrawal of works is permitted after they are accepted for the exhibition.

Commission: The BAC retains a 30% commission on all sales . Work may not be removed during the exhibit.

Insurance/Liability: By delivering or shipping your work, you agree that, although the BAC will take reasonable measures to ensure the safety of the work in the gallery, the BAC is not responsible for loss of or damage to the artwork, and the artist is responsible for his/her own insurance if desired.

Publicity: Artist grants permission for the BAC to use submitted images of artwork for promotion and publicity. The BAC will promote the exhibit through its Web site, e-mail list, press releases, and social media.

Delivery and Shipping of Accepted Artwork:

All accepted work must arrive between Monday April 3 and Saturday April 8, 2023. Works accepted for the exhibit are to be hand-delivered or shipped to:

Hand-Delivered Work – Artwork to be hand-delivered must arrive at the Berkeley Art Works on Wednesday 4/5, Thursday 4/6, or Friday 4/7 from 11am to 5pm, or Saturday 4/8 from 11am to 4pm. All artwork must have identifying information attached: Title, name of artist, medium, price.

Shipped Work – Artwork to be shipped must arrive during the week of Monday April 3 through Friday April 7, 2023. Staff will be at the gallery to receive shipments between 11am and 5pm. Work must be shipped prepaid to the Berkeley Art Works in sturdy, reusable packing. (Please no styrofoam packing peanuts!) Plexiglass must be used on all shipped works, no glass. All artwork must have identifying information attached: Title, name of artist, medium, price.

For return shipping, a pre-paid, printed shipping label must be included with your workno exceptions! Hand-written labels are not acceptable. The Berkeley Arts Council will not pay for return shipping. Failure to provide a proper pre-paid shipping label could result in delays and increased costs, and could result in damage to your work due to limited storage available at the gallery.

IMPORTANT: The Berkeley Art Works does not receive U.S. Mail at the gallery address. Do not use the U.S. Postal Service to ship your work. Please use Federal Express (FedEx) or United Parcel Service (UPS). Please e-mail the tracking number(s) to bacexhibits@gmail.com for reference. Artists are responsible for tracking and verification of when the package is delivered. Please make UPS/FedEx aware that our hours for accepting deliveries are Monday – Friday, 11am to 5pm. If you are unable to use FedEx or UPS to ship your work, please e-mail us at bacexhibits@gmail.com for instructions.

Pick Up of Work at End of the Exhibit – Artists picking up their work at the conclusion of the show should do so on Saturday May 20, 2023 from 11:00am to 4:00pm.

Return of Shipped Work – The BAC will deliver shipped work to FedEx/UPS on Monday/Tuesday following the close of the show, on or about May 22/24, 2023.
