Art and Earth Exhibit Accepted Artists Announced

Juror Judith Becker has selected 42 works by 39 artists for the 13th Annual Art and Earth Juried Exhibit.

The exhibit will open April 12 at the Berkeley Art Works, 116 North Queen Street in Martinsburg, WV and be on display through May 20.

Juror’s Statement:

Jurying a body of art work can be both exciting and daunting.  Exciting in that the jurist has the opportunity to examine each piece carefully and evaluate against his or her list of criteria established to level the playing field in terms of selecting the works which have greater value than others.  Daunting because the jurist must take out the selection process his or her own biases towards various art styles, preferences for the subject matter, etc.

This Art and Earth call produced art pieces which reflected many interpretations of artists’ views of this broad theme.  There were many works which reflected traditional subjects and many which were more creative interpretations of the theme.  I enjoyed studying all of them with the theme in the forefront of my evaluations.  Secondly, as an art teacher, I looked at how well the artist incorporated good art techniques such as composition/design, use of color and values, and techniques.  The ones selected for this exhibit demonstrated good command of the fundamentals of good art.

Lastly, in deciding which pieces would be selected for our awards, I looked for pieces of art that had that “Wow” factor.  These are the art pieces that you want to look at for more than a glance, the ones that prompt the viewer to linger a while and be amazed at the overall impact of the art.

I want to thank the Berkeley Arts Council for giving me the opportunity to select these wonderful pieces of art to exhibit at our gallery.  I am honored to have a part in what I think will be an amazing exhibit.

– Judith Becker
