All About Color II

This class is designed for students who have taken the first color class and is a requirement  for participation.

Materials needed: Students may work in any 2 dimensional art medium of choice , but paints which can be mixed work best..   A small color wheel is required as well as the materials the student prefers to use to complete various exercises.  Also, it is necessary for student to bring pencils, erasers, scissors, glue stick and appropriate art paper as well as note paper.  All other materials will be provided by instructor.

Materials needed:

9’ X 12’ or larger pad of standard pastel paper and a pad of sanded paper (available through many online art supply outlets.)  Minimum of no less than 48artist grade soft pastel sticks(please do not buy inexpensive children’s type of pastels), small stiff flat brush, , can of workable fixative, disposable gloves, masking or artists tape and a board, like foam core board on which to attach your papers.

Become a Color Pro

Fridays February 5, 12, 19, 27; 2:00-4:00pm (Four Weeks)

Instructor: Judith Becker

This is a four week, 8 hour class offered on Zoom.  Each 2 hour class period will lead you through all the features, benefits and nuances of each of the primary color families ending with an explanation of blacks and greys.  Every week we will delve into many of the commonly known hues in each color family starting with the reds, then progressing through the blues and then yellows.  Your learning will give you a firm foundation of knowing which hue in the color family you should use to get a specific effect.  There will be simple exercises to do for each color family.  And you can use your favorite medium, water colors, acrylics, oils or colored pencils.  (Not helpful with pastels).

Materials needed:

Your medium of choice and appropriate painting surface (some type of paper, not boards).  Sheets of oil or acrylic paper or acid free watercolor paper work best for these mediums.  You will also need appropriate brushes, ruler, pencil or pen, note book, etc.

All About Color I

Class is a comprehensive study of color and all its attributes necessary to producing outstanding 2 dimensional art.  Students will learn the following:  color theory, rules in using and mixing colors, color wheels, triads and tetrads, color in design, color schemes and much more.  Class is comprised of both lectures and hands on exercises and is useful for beginners as well as advanced artists.

Materials needed: Students may work in any 2 dimensional art medium of choice.  A small color  wheel is required as well as the materials the student prefers to use to complete various exercises.  Also, it is necessary for student to bring pencils, erasers, scissors, and appropriate art paper as well as note paper.  Handouts will be provided by instructor via email.

Creative Techniques for Painting Landscapes

Discover interesting, even unusual ways to reinterpret a landscape photo in this interactive Zoom class. Using the same reference photo for all four class sessions, participants will select exciting color schemes, redesign the composition through cropping and highlighting, eliminate elements, change the focal points and explore how to abstract the original reference photo.

Materials needed: Participant may paint with any medium, having on hand all materials necessary to execute an 8 X 10 or 9 X 10 or 11 X 14 painting, 4 X 5 index cards, paper, pen or pencil for notetaking, a #2 HB pencil and sketch pad, and at least 2 or 3 interesting landscape reference photos or pictures.

This free workshop will show the participant what materials one uses to paint with colored pencils and the basic ways to use the pencils to create paintings that end up looking like oil or acrylic pieces of art.  This is a very easy to learn and easy to implement type of art medium that brings many hours of enjoyment to people of all art levels of expertise.

Materials needed:

If one wants to work along with the instructor as she demonstrates how to use the pencils, you can use whatever Prismacolor colored pencils you have as well as a good, sturdy white art paper and a simple pencil sharpener.

Class introduces beginners and those with some experience to the process of creating a painting with colored pencils.  It explores the many effects possible with the pencils including mixing colors, blending for smoothness, making various textures plus much more.  A variety of painting surfaces are explored and participants create several small painting using the techniques learned.

Materials needed:

Box of no less than 24 colored pencils, preferably by Prismacolor Premier (smooth, rich laydown), Derwent or Faber Castel (do not buy hard, thin or firm colored pencils.)  Pad of Strathmore Vellum Bristol Board paper, 9”X12”.  Lead pencil, ruler, eraser.  All other materials will be provided by instructor.

Beginning Watercolor Pencil on Zoom

Fridays May 7, 14, 21, 28; 2:00-4:00pm (Four Weeks)

Instructor: Judith Becker

This class is appropriate for students who have no watercolor painting experience as well as those who currently paint with watercolors, but who want to expand their techniques.  Students will learn how to lay down colors to create multitudes of variations of hues, of achieving many different textures, and of the ease of using the pencils when traveling, journaling, making their own greeting or note cards, or when sketching as well as painting entire compositions.

Materials needed:

Box of no less than 24 watercolor pencils, (but more is preferable.)   Do not buy Inktense type.  Many makers of these pencils are available at the usual arts/crafts stores as well as from art suppliers on the internet.  A 9″X12″ pad of 140 lb watercolor paper, a variety of soft, watercolor brushes (preferably #4, #6 & #8 round and a 1″ flat), ruler, pencil, eraser is required.  All other materials will be provided by instructor.

Mixed Media Mash-Up (4th Grade and Up)

Discover a new art approach each week ! Have fun with handmade papermaking, experiment with ink drawing and colorful painting, get excited about printmaking, and create awesome tissue paper collage. Ink and Watercolor Sketching

Mixed Media Journaling

Tuesdays June 4, 11, 18, 25; 1-4pm (Four Weeks)
Instructor: Leah Bennett

Mixed Media Journal Class is an exciting unique process to create mixed media art.  Participants learn how to express themselves by creating  dynamic backgrounds to support various drawings, textures, poems, verses, etc. using wet or dry mediums.  Materials such as magazine cuts, photos, glitter, coffee filters and more are utilized to compose an overall personal visual statement.  The enjoyment comes from unleashing one’s imagination and feelings.

Supplies: Mixed media journal with heavy pages; waterproof ink pen in black or choice of color; white gel or acrylic pen (used for writing);  choice of acrylic paints, watercolor paint or pencil, markers; small round tip brushes sizes 4 or 6 and 10 or 12; transparent heavy duty glue or gel medium; any color gesso used to waterproof the completed surface.  All other materials will be supplied by the instructor.

Learn the basics or brush up on rusty skills. Work in the painting medium of choice to explore color and personal style. Work at your own pace with individual instruction in this open studio format class. Over 6 weeks, you’ll learn with the help of in-class demonstrations and one-on-one advice from the instructor. Bring paints, brushes and painting surface to first class.

  • cadmium yellow medium (cadmium yellow light is not necessary but could come in handy)

This class is for anyone at any level of experience painting in other mediums who may have wanted to paint with oils but were not sure where to start. You will learn the basic techniques of using oils with some extra fun facts about painting in general that other instructors might not think to teach you. The instructor will take you step by step through a series of painting exercises that will build your skill level and confidence. You will also learn about the fundamentals of color mixing and application.

This is a class for those with little or no experience in painting with watercolors, but who want to learn starting with the most essential basics and developing skills leading to accomplishing good watercolor painting techniques. This class takes all the mystery and fear out of the process and shows the student of any level of expertise how to be successful in this beautiful process.

Supplies:

­­Student will need a basic set of tube watercolor paints (such as Winsor & Newton, Grumbacher or other non-student grade paint) , no less than 12 colors (don’t need black or white), a 9″X12″ pad of 140lb watercolor paper, #4, #6 & #8 good medium grade round watercolor brushes, as well as a 1″flat brush, a watercolor palette, pencil, ruler, and eraser. All other supplies will be provided by instructor. ( Please do not buy inexpensive brushes like those that come in a pack of 10 for $8. They do not perform well!)

Beginning Drawing Animals and Other Fauna

Thursdays March 7, 14, 21 and 28th; 1-4pm (Four weeks)

Instructor: Judith Becker

This class introduces a unique method of learning how to draw, especially for animal enthusiasts.  The class will present all the standard techniques to help one learn to draw well while also giving instruction on how to draw animals, birds, insects, reptiles, etc.  Students learn how to form animal’s shapes by becoming knowledgeable about their skeletal structure  and the components of their outer skin/shell/fur and feathers.  All this will be accomplished with pencils and sharp pointed marker pens.

Supplies: Participants will need a full 12” X 16” white paper drawing pad, a pad of tracing paper, a full range of good drawing pencils (H, HB and B ranges), a couple of good erasers, ruler, and a simple protractor.

Lifting Your Art with Dynamic Design and Composition

Fridays March 8, 15, 22, 29; 1-4pm (Four weeks)

Instructor: Judith Becker

All successful art begins with good planning.  Good planning involves engaging the critical principles of Design and Composition.  This 4 week class presents various ways to elevate a reference photo to an exciting painting or drawing.  Participants will explore numerous creative ways to turn ‘nice’ reference photos to ‘Wow’ works of art.  This is a fun class which elicits interaction among fellow students, opening up one’s right side of the brain, and traveling unusual and different approaches to one’s art work.

Supplies: Pad of 12” X 16” white drawing paper, pad of tracing paper, various types of graphite drawing pencils, erasers, rulers,  scissors, and any art materials one is comfortable using.  Also helpful will be reference photos you would to work with.

Watercolor Pencils are an excellent art medium to use by itself or with regular waters or other media.  They are very portable, easy to use and present opportunities to work small, as with note cards, or much larger in a full sized painting.  Students will learn how watercolor pencil painting utilizes many of the same techniques as used in watercolor painting and colored pencils.  Many find this art media is easier to manage than standard watercolors.

Supplies: Box of no less than 24 watercolor pencils (do not buy Inktense type), and purchase the ‘artist’ grade, not ‘student’ grade which tends to be less expensive.  Also, you will need a 9″X12″ 140 lb watercolor paper pad, #4 & #6 round watercolor brushes, small palette, pencil sharpener, lead pencil, ruler, eraser.  All other materials will be provided by instructor.

Painting All Types of Animals

Thursdays April 4, 11, 18, 25; 1-4pm (Four weeks)

Instructor: Judith Becker

Beginning Drawing of Animals class helpful, but not required.  This class teaches a number of approaches to painting animals of all sorts, from beautiful butterflies to majestic horses, charming dogs and cute kitties.  Participants learn to identify the various colors of the animals  and the paint strokes needed to produce lifelike animals which project moods, personalities and true characteristics.

Supplies: Participants will need pad of white drawing paper, pad of tracing paper, protractor, pencils, erasers, rulers, scissors and all supplies of desired art medium needed to produce some small paintings.

4 in 1 class: Trees, Rocks, Textures, Backgrounds

Thursdays May 2, 9, 16, 23; 1-4pm (Four weeks)

Instructor: Judith Becker

Each week, participants will learn to draw and paint that week’s subject in various ways.  Painting trees of all sorts will be shown in ways to make them either realistic or interpretive. Rocks will be demystified and painted to reflect their forms and surfaces through management of shadows and shadings.  Textures will be introduced to help enhance the overall look of an art piece and a variety of techniques to produce useful and appropriate backgrounds to support the overall appearance of a painting will be learned.

Creative Approaches to Painting Landscapes

Fridays May 3, 10, 17, 24; (Four weeks)

Learn to paint landscapes with that WOW! factor.  Working from the same landscape reference photo of your choice each week, instructor will present different approaches to paint the same landscape scene but with vastly different results.  This is a unique way to push your own art into new dimensions, all the while learning composition and color  theory beyond the usual.  You will surprise yourself with your ability to advance your own art expertise.

Painting on Porcelain

Wednesdays June 5, 12, 19, 26; 1-4pm (Four weeks)

Instructor: Janet Hockman

The amazing art of porcelain painting and how to paint the shadows and illusions of a dogwood blossum in spring. How to achieve our shadows and shapes with the layering of these translucent paints. No previous experience with porcelain required. Very fun class.

Supplies:  Instructor will supply all materials, paints, brushes, and porcelain plate, and the firing of plate after each class. Students may bring paper towels. And painting apron.

Level 1 All About Color

Thursdays February 13, 20, 27, March 5; 1-4pm (Four weeks)

Class is a comprehensive study of color and all its attributes necessary to producing outstanding 2-dimensional art. Students will learn the following:  color theory, rules in using and mixing colors, color wheels, triads and tetrads, color in design, color schemes and much more. Class is comprised of both lectures and hands on exercises and is useful for beginners as well as advanced artists.

Supplies: ­­Students may work in any 2-dimensional art medium which can be mixed. A small color wheel is required as well as the materials the student prefers to use to complete various exercises. Also, it is necessary for student to bring pencils, erasers, scissors, and appropriate art paper as well as note paper. All other materials will be provided by instructor. A list of all colors to be used will be provided to participants prior to start of class.

Child Portraiture in Colored Pencil

Fridays February 14, 21, 28, March 6; 1-4pm (Four weeks)

Learn to ‘paint’ children’s portraits through process of capturing accurate likenesses of a child’s head/face, hair, how to choose best pose and composition, how to choose correct colors for skin tones and shadows and portray textures of clothing, backgrounds, etc.

Supplies: ­­12” X 16” pad of Bristol Board Vellum paper, set of minimum 48 Prismacolor or similar artist grade colored pencils, (will need Peach, Light Peach, Jasmine, Light Umber, Dark Umber, Blush Pink if not included in the set, grid paper, tracing paper, #2 pencil, sharpener, kneaded eraser, ruler, and several 8” X 10” colored reference photos of child to be painted.

Mixed Media Journaling

Tuesdays February 18, 25, March 3, 10; 9:00am – 12 Noon (Four weeks)

Mixed Media Journal Class is an exciting unique process to create mixed media art. Participants learn how to express themselves by creating dynamic backgrounds to support various drawings, textures, poems, verses, etc. using wet or dry mediums. Materials such as magazine cuts, photos, glitter, coffee filters and more are utilized to compose an overall personal visual statement. The enjoyment comes from unleashing one’s imagination and feelings.

Supplies: Mixed media journal with heavy pages; waterproof ink pen in black or choice of color; white gel or acrylic pen (used for writing); choice of acrylic paints, watercolor paint or pencil, markers; small round tip brushes sizes 4 or 6 and 10 or 12; transparent heavy duty glue or gel medium; any color gesso used to waterproof the completed surface. All other materials will be supplied by the instructor.

Acrylics with Palette Knife

Acrylic Painters…put away those brushes and pull out your palette knifes for a different way to create amazing works of art.  Learn the many ways to create textures and marks that enhance your composition.  This is a great experience for those who mostly paint with detail as the technique takes you into surprising different directions.

Supplies: In addition to your usual inventory of oil painting supplies, bring various sizes and shapes of palette knifes.  Reference photos which can be used as your inspiration will be useful.

Policy:

Registration

Class information and fees are provided on the BAC website. An online registration form must be completed either by the student or a BAC representative. Tuition may be paid online using a credit card that is processed through the secure PayPal system.

Registration may also be paid by cash or check but payment must be received within four days of the start of the class to assure the student a space. BAC reserves the right to take a student off the roster if not paid in advance.

Holiday schedule: Classes will be held on federal or state holidays (President’s Day, election day, etc.) if that is a normally scheduled day. Class will not be held on Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, or during the last 2 weeks of December.

Refunds

Coordinator must authorize payment of a refund. PayPal refunds are available within a limited time. Payment by cash or check will be refunded by check mailed to the student or to the person who made the payment (a parent, etc.)

REFUND POLICY:

If a class is cancelled by BAC due to insufficient enrollment or another reason, the instructor or Coordinator shall notify the students and arrange for a refund of fees paid.

Withdrawal from class

If a student pays for a class and then withdraws, refunds will be made as follows:

· Withdrawal after first class session: no refund unless there are special circumstances, i.e. a medical or family emergency. A fee of 20% of the original amount will be deducted and the remaining amount is pro-rated by number of classes already held.

· Withdrawal less than four days prior to first session: refund of fee paid less 20% service charge.
