Writing Your Artist’s Statement

Saturdays: October 21, 2023, 2:00pm-5:00pm

“Isn’t my statement the same as my bio?”  Definitely not!  Your statement focuses on your work.  It is your opportunity to describe it to your audience.  You will need an artist’s statement for things like entering exhibitions, joining artist registries, working with galleries, developing marketing materials, creating web sites and using social media, among other things.  In this workshop, you’ll learn the importance of your statement, and what to include. You will learn tips for writing a powerful statement and begin creating your own.

Ongoing Adventures in Oil and Cold Wax

Fridays: October 6-27, 9:30AM-12:30PM (4 sessions)

We are mixing it up a little! For those that took the introductory Cold Wax Oil Palette Knife class, this ongoing exploration will take those lessons learned to a new level. Learn new techniques and take your art to the next level! If you already have knowledge in this medium, please feel free to join us.

Buyers, collectors, gallerists, curators and grant-givers want to know about you before they invest money, time and wall space.  Your bio is a very important piece of information about you and your practice.  At some point, you’ll be asked to provide one. Learn why a bio is important and what to include in yours!

Plein and Simple: An Introduction to Plein Air Painting

Sunday, October 22; 10am-4pm at the Berkeley Art Works
Saturday, October 28; 9am-4pm at Poorhouse Farm Park

Take your paints outside to play! Create in the spirit of the Plein Air movement started by 19thcentury European artists. Learn a simple approach to avoid the overwhelm of painting from life outdoors. No paints?  No problem!  We will discuss simple set-up options to get you started, as well as tips to develop your kit over time. This 2-day workshop both in the classroom and in the field will teach you what you need to know to start painting confidently “en plein air.”

Introduction to Gilding and Painting the Illuminated Letter

November 11, 2023, 1:00PM – 5:00PM

To illuminate means to enlighten with brilliant colors and to use gold and, at times, silver to embellish manuscripts. In this workshop, we will use modern materials to create an ornamented illuminated letter from historical lettering styles. We will learn and apply faux gold leaf to the illuminated letter, perfect for gift giving!

Intermediate Gilding with Real Gold Leaf and Painting the Illuminated Letter Workshop

How often have you admired artwork embellished with gold leaf? The richness of real gold lends itself to the brilliance of the work of art and is the most wonderous precious metal to employ for ethereal and sacred art. Wool Needle Felted Tomte, Gnome, or Wizard

November 19, 2023 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
 
Learn to needle felt, or improve your skills by learning new techniques in a fun and relaxing setting. You will leave with characters that are perfect for gift giving while feeling inspired to create your own new designs. Choose the morning or afternoon session…or attend both!

Registering and paying online is the fastest way to ensure your spot in the class. If you pay by check, we must receive your payment at least four days before your class starts.  Online registration and payment is available until the class fills.

TO REGISTER IN PERSON: Registration and payment is available in the Berkeley Art Works gallery during regular hours, Wed-Fri 11-5, Sat 11-4.

Policy:

Registration

Class information and fees are provided on the BAC website. An online registration form must be completed either by the student or a BAC representative. Tuition may be paid online using a credit card that is processed through our secure payment system.

Registration may also be paid by cash or check but payment must be received within four days of the start of the class to assure the student a space. BAC reserves the right to take a student off the roster if not paid in advance. Follow this link for a printable registration form.

Holiday schedule: Classes will be held on federal or state holidays (President’s Day, election day, etc.) if that is a normally scheduled day. Class will not be held on Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, or during the last 2 weeks of December.

Refunds

Coordinator must authorize payment of a refund. PayPal refunds are available within a limited time. Payment by cash or check will be refunded by check mailed to the student or to the person who made the payment (a parent, etc.)

REFUND POLICY:

If a class is cancelled by BAC due to insufficient enrollment or another reason, the instructor or  Coordinator shall notify the students and arrange for a refund of fees paid.

Withdrawal from class

If a student pays for a class and then withdraws, refunds will be made as follows:

· Withdrawal after first class session: no refund unless there are special circumstances, i.e. a medical or family emergency. A fee of 20% of the original amount will be deducted and the remaining amount is pro-rated by number of classes already held.

· Withdrawal less than four days prior to first session: refund of fee paid less 20% service charge.
