How to Explore the Trail
The Public Art Trail is designed as a starting point for discovering murals, monuments, sculptures, and historic visual landmarks in and around Martinsburg.

Spring Fling
Location: 301 N. Queen St.
Year: c. 2008
Medium: Latex house paints and acrylics on board
A cheerful depiction of a flowering meadow, this work brings bright color and a sense of renewal to the streetscape.
The Lonesome Touch
Location: 100 N. Queen St.
Year: 2004
Located on the side of Martinsburg’s antebellum Market House building, this mural spans two recessed arches and depicts a master fiddler performing while others pause to listen.
Roots and Horizons: Celebrating Berkeley County’s Journey
Location: 301 E. Stephen St.
Year: 2024
This seven-panel installation was created for Berkeley County’s 250th commemoration and is mounted on the historic Martinsburg Steam Laundry building along the Frog Hollow Recreation Trail.

A 20 x 30-foot artwork created as a Main Street Martinsburg community art project, this mural was designed to resemble stained glass.
Big Apple Time Capsule
Location: 605 W. King St.
Year: 1990
Medium: Painted fiberglass, metal rods, 55-gallon drums
Created as part of a Community Pride Project, this iconic apple celebrates Martinsburg’s heritage as the Apple Capital City and houses a time capsule to be reopened in 2040.
Christmas in Old Virginia
Location: Martinsburg Public Library, 101 W. King St.
Year: 1927
Also known as Christmas at Mount Vernon, this work was used by Interwoven Stocking Co. for a sock box illustration and a holiday advertisement in The Saturday Evening Post.
Bronze Doughboy
Location: 500 North Tennessee Avenue, War Memorial Park
Year: 1925
Medium: Bronze on granite base
Sponsored by the American Legion Berkeley Post 14 Ladies Auxiliary, this monument originally stood on West King Street and was refurbished and relocated in 2022.
Public Drinking Fountain
Location: 500 block of W. Stephen Street
Year: 1902
Material: Granite
This approximately 12-foot-tall granite fountain was originally installed in Martinsburg Town Square and donated by Emily Alburtis Bishop in memory of her husband and son.
Historic Signs and Painted Advertising
As the trail grows, historic painted signs may also help tell the visual story of downtown.

Location: Downtown Martinsburg
Fading painted signs like this one add another layer to the visual history of downtown and may become part of the trail over time.
