The Berkeley Arts Council (BAC) announces the 11th Annual Art & Earth Juried Art Exhibit. The exhibit has the theme ‘Art and Earth: My Art – My World’. The exhibit opens Thursday April 22, 2021 in the Berkeley Art Works, 116 North Queen Street, Martinsburg, WV. The exhibit will be on display through Saturday May 29, 2021.
Entries should reflect the artist’s view of nature, the environment, or reflect an Earth Day related theme. Any medium or technique, 2-dimension or 3-dimension, is acceptable. The exhibit is open to visual artists throughout the continental United States, over the age of 18, working in any media. Entries must be original works of art that have been completed within the last three (3) years, and have not been previously exhibited at the Berkeley Art Works.
Juror:
The Juror is Paula Phillips, Faculty & Residency Coordinator for the MFA in Community Arts Program, Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). She is a former director of MICA’s Community Arts Partnerships (CAP) program, and has been a full-time member of the teaching faculty in the MA and now MFA in Community Arts Program since 2004. She holds Bachelor of Arts degrees from Huston-Tillotson College (1971) and Texas Wesleyan University (1994), and a Master of Fine Arts degree from MICA’s Hoffberger School of Painting (1996).
Phillips is a practicing studio and community artist, a social justice advocate and activist. She specializes in mixed-media paintings that embrace social justice issues, actualized through personal experiences and cultural and professional relationships. She incorporates the disciplines of painting, fibers, photography, ceramics, and sculptural form in her work. Her artwork has been exhibited along the Eastern Seaboard, primarily in the Baltimore-Washington areas.
Phillips is a recipient of MICA’s 2018 Trustee Award for Teaching Excellence and the 2007 Distinguished Service Award. She has been recognized by the Maryland State Department of Education for curriculum development of summer programs for Baltimore City children, youth and teens and received citations from the Baltimore City and the State of Maryland. She served three years as coordinator of MICA’s Community Arts Convening & Research Project.

Entry Fee: The entry fee for the exhibit is $35 for the first two works. Artists may submit one or two additional works for $10 each, for a maximum of four works.
Awards: Best in Show $500 Total prizes $1,000.

Entries: Entries for the Art & Earth exhibit must be submitted as digital images for jurying. You may submit up to four works to be juried for this exhibit.
The image file format should be normal (“baseline”) JPEG. Do not save as “progressive” JPEG. The images should be 1200 pixels on the long dimension with the other dimension proportional. Save at 72 PPI at high quality setting (8 out of 10 or 80% is good).
Set your filename to lastname_title_WxHxD_entrynumber.jpg. (example: jones_pretty-girl_11x14x1_no1.jpg). Dimensions should include framing. One additional image to show detail for 3-dimensional work is allowed.
Notification of Accepted Work: Notification of the juror’s selections will be announced by e-mail and posted on our web site (this page) on or about March 29, 2021. Detailed delivery instructions and schedules will be provided when the accepted artists are announced.
General Guidelines for Accepted Work: If accepted, the original works must be ready for presentation. Two-dimensional work must be ready for hanging and must not exceed 48 inches in width, including frame. Paintings and works on paper must be suitably framed. All entries to be hung must be equipped with wire, ready for hanging (no sawtooth or loop hangers, please). Three-dimensional works, must not exceed 72 inches in height and 36 inches in width or depth. Three-dimensional work must be free-standing. No substitution, exchange, modification, or withdrawal of works is permitted after they are accepted for the exhibition. All artwork must have identifying information attached: Title, artist’s name, medium, price.
Commission: The BAC retains a 30% commission on all sales during the exhibit. While we prefer to keep purchased work in the exhibit to the end of the exhibit, purchased works may be released immediately to the customer at the discretion of the gallery management.
Insurance: By delivering or shipping your work, you agree that, although the BAC will take reasonable measures to ensure the safety of the entries in the gallery, the BAC is not responsible for loss of or damage to the artwork, and the artist is responsible for his/her own insurance if desired.
Publicity: Artist grants permission for the BAC to use submitted images of artwork for promotion and publicity. The BAC will promote the exhibit through its web site, e-mail list, press releases, and other methods that are available.

Hand-Delivered Work: Artwork to be hand-delivered must arrive at the gallery between Thursday April 15 and Saturday April 17. Gallery hours are Thursday/Friday 11:00am to 5:00pm, and Saturday 11:00am to 4:00pm.
Shipped Work: Artwork to be shipped must arrive between Monday April 12 and Friday, April 16. Work must be shipped prepaid to Berkeley Art Works at the address above in sturdy, reusable packing so that your work can be safely returned to you. (Please no styrofoam peanuts!) Plexiglass must be used on all shipped works, no glass.
IMPORTANT:
For your return shipping please include with your work a pre-paid printed label. Hand-written paperwork is not acceptable. Failure to provide a proper pre-paid label will result in delays and increased costs for shipping the work back to you, and could result in damage to your work due to very limited storage options.
U.S. Mail is not delivered to the gallery address. Please use a shipping service that provides tracking information such as UPS or FEDEX. Please e-mail the tracking number(s) to us at berkeleyartswv@gmail.com. Please retain your tracking number so you can verify online when the package is delivered.
Pick Up of Work at the End of the Exhibit: Artists picking up their work at the conclusion of the show should do so on Saturday May 29 from 11:00am up to closing time at 4:00pm. If you cannot pick up during those times, please contact us to make arrangements. (Note that our storage is very limited.)
